Introduction
|
- Pineapple is believed to have originated from the
American continent.
- Pineapple is one of the most widely traded tropical
fruits, mostly in a processed form.
- Thailand is the world's biggest producer of canned
pineapple accounting for 16% of the global output,
followed by the Philippines (12%) and Brazil (10%) in
1997.
- In 1996, 1.3 million tons of processed products (product
weight of canned and juice) were exported which is
equivalent to 75% of the entire pineapple traded
internationally (by value).
- Fresh pineapple fruit constitutes 25% of the total
pineapple exports of Thailand, but comprises 31% of the
total fresh tropical fruits by value marketed
internationally.
- Popular pineapple cultivars for fresh consumption are
"Phuket" (Malacca Queen) and
"Intharachit" (a native cultivar).
- "Patatavia", also known as "Smooth
Cayenne" is used for commercial processing though it
is also consumed fresh.
- On average, 80 per cent of the total pineapple
production is sent to 22 factories.
- Other products derived from pineapple include juice,
jam, and candied products.
- Pineapple is used in many dairy products usually as a
flavoring for ice cream or as an added value component in
yogurt.

Raw material issues
|
- The present utilization rates are low because of a
supply shortage of raw material and high prices.
- Pineapple is grown mostly at the southern region of
Thailand.
- The largest production area is Prachuab Kiri Khan
accounting for over 50% of the total production followed
by Rayong, Phetchburi, Chonburi and Chumphon. The southern
region accounts for 59% of the production, the east for
17% and the western region for 14%.
- Climatic fluctuations result in raw material supply
irregularities.
